MINERS' TROUBLE.

In connection with the miners* trouble, the Hon. J. A. Millar, speaking to a "Post" reporter, said that the Government can do absolutely nothing in the matter. It is a question purely between the owners and men. The men are practically asking the Government to give a blank cheque to every miner in the country who is suffering from disease. "We could not do that without the authority of Parliament," said the Minister. POSITION AT THAMES. NO TROUBLE ANTICIPATED. THAMES, January 4. Regarding the difficulty re the medical examination of miners, in view of the provision of the Workers' Compensation Act, so far as the local position is concerned, the companies insist on the men being examined. In some cases no definite instructions have been issued, but the managers are not likely to accept the responsibility of dispensing with medical examination in view of the almost unanimous desire of mining companies that medical examinations are to be held. In some cases men have taken time by the forelock and have already been examined and armed with their medical certificates will commence work forthwith, in the case of those who have been on will be found to be suffering from miners' complaint, in the Thames there must be a considerable nurflr her. The Wen must perforce wait for the return of the Stipendiary Magistrate before tbey can the necessary exemption It is not anticipated that any trouble will arise locally, as the Union being outside of the Miners-* Federation any mandate issued by that body has no bearing upon the local position. WE3TPORT, January 4. Work at the collieries in this district has been resumed after the holidays. The output is fairly good. The Reef ton trouble so far has not affected the collieries in the district.
