Saturday, SHORTS AT MAKURI.

Although the weather yestex<ky moJning was very unfavourable, yet quite a dozen well-loaded vehicles, including a large four-in-hand drag, left Pahiatua for the New Year sports at Makuri. Rain did mot fall till the evening at about 16 o'clock. The President (Mt John McCarthy), the Secretary (Mr L. Polglase) and the committee all worked hard to ensure the success of the meeting, and are to be congratulated on the result of their efforts. The refreshment committee supplied all those present with tea, etc., free. Mr A. East, of Pahiatua, had a fruit and confectionery stall on the ground. A dance was held in the Makuri Hall in the - evening, when a large number of people from all the surrounding districts were present, and an enjoyable evening was spent.

SOCIAL AT KONINI. The annual Ne.v Year social at Koiiini last evening was a decided success. > The Hall was crowded. An excellent programme of musical items was rendered. The efforts of the singers pleased the audience, who warmly applauded each one. Songs were rendered by Mrs P. Quirke (2), Messrs J. Vosper (2) and G. Smith, ' and a duet by Mrs Quirke and Mrs Hirst. Mr Gordon Smith acted as MX. The function was brought to a close about 3 o'clock this morning. ; ACCIDENTS.A young man, named J. Walker had . the misfortune to break the small bone of one of his arms at the elbow. It appears that Walker and another youth <v double-banked" a horse. The animal commenced to rear and plunge, with the result that Walker was thrown to the ground and injured. A very ; ;painful acccident happened to Mrs C. Stokes, who with her brother and another lady were driving to the Makuri Sports yesterday. When nearing the Gorge, Mrs Stokes, so it is thought fainted, and fall f«m the gig. Mrs Stokes carried the reins with her. The horse took fright and bolted, and one wheel of the gig passed over Mrs Stokes. She was conveyed back to her residence in Pahiatua, and was immediately attended to by Dr. Dawson. On enquiry to day I learnt that she was doing as well as could be expected in the circumstances. ' TENNIS TOURNAMENT. , > The tennis tournament was commenced at the local courts yesterday, and although the .weather was fine there was a sti'ong wind blowing which was very objectionable to the players. The following were the results: — Men's Championship Doubles-Semi-final: Jackson and Gavvith beat Swainson Bros., 6 —5, 3 —6, 6 4.

Howe and Herd Won by default from Saunders and Some. Final: Howe and Herd (Wellington) beat Jackson and Gawith '(Masterton), 6—5, 6—2. Men's Championship Singles— W. Swatnson will ylay off with C. Adams.

Ladies' Singles ChampionshipMiss R. Hughes will play off with Mrs Wagg.

Combined Championship Doubles — J. Swainson and Miss fl. Hughes vrill psay the winners of the match between Jackson and Mrs Wagg and *Herd and Miss Huglies. Men's Handicap Singles—Howe (scratch) beat Jackson (receive 5).

Ladies' Handicap Singles—Miss Laura Hughes will play the winner of the match between Miss N. Hughes and Miss R. Hughes. Combined Handicap Doubles—J. Swainson and Miss R. Hughes will meet Jaokson and Mrs Wagg in the final.

Men's Handicap Doubles—Howe and Herd (rec. 15) beat Swainson Bros, (scratch), 70—67. Ladies' Handicap Doubles —The Misses Hughes will play off with Miss Laura Hughes and Miss Grant. The finals will be played on Monday morning.

The championship games were closely contested. The rain on Friday night stopped play till Saturday afternoon. The courts were •rather heavy. There was a large number of interested spectators. GENERAL. The Methodist Sunday School children did not hold their annual picnic yesterday at Mr Robinson's farm at Konini, owing to the ground being damp. The picnic was held, however, on the Recreation Ground, and as the day turned out fine it was a decided success.

The holders of the Feathers in connection with the local Bowling Club are being constantly challenged, and yesterday Messrs J. Hughes, C. R. Mitchell, Mcßartney and Wakeman (skip) tried to wrestle the honours from them, but were not successful. The holders (Messrs Hewat, J. D. C. Crewe, Hawkins and Ransom, skip) won by 28 to 17. A number of other enjoyable games were played between members. The Pongaroa Rifle Club's picnic took place yesterday at the range. Several sweepstake matches were fired, and also a ladies' match.

The winner of the handsome challenge cup for the mo3t points at the Makuri sports yesterday is, I under stand, Mr Albert Debreceny, of this town. The cup had to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, and several sprinters have a "lee-in" for this valuable trophy.
