NOTES.

(By "Zetland").

The successful riders at the Wairarapa meeting were: S. Reid, five wins; R. Hatch, H. Telford, W. Ryan and F. Cress, two each; W. Ayre, Shanahan and A. Watson, one each. By winning the Rirautaka and Tawaha Hack Handicaps at Tauherenikau, Osiris showed that he has struck form. The San Fran gelding has plenty of pace, and givea- evidence of being able to stay, consequently he should be useful during: the remainder of the season- In her races Lucretius showed a rare dash of pace, but apparently was unable to show the necessary determination to finish fast at the right end. Merrivonia is running very consistently. After winning the Pukio Hack in fast time on the first dty the Merriwee mare ran a good second to Osiris in tne Tawaha Hack, run over seven furlongs. In winning the Racing Club Handicap, Moloch ran his best race so far this season. He was ridden a patient race by A. Watscn, who showed to advantage in a brilliant finish. The Mauser gelding is improving with every gallop, and should score further victories in thenear future.

The rider of Merrie Rose lost a stirrup early in the Racing Club Handicap, and the mare was pulled up after going six furlongs. Sunbonnet ran disappointingly in both of her essays. She is looking exceptionally well, and will probably race belter from now to the end of the season.

Burdened with the welter weight of 10.9, including about f orty pounds dead weight, Tumut failed to give Lwchiela 481 hs in the Rawiri Handicap. The race was run in fast time, anrl the Meiriwee gelding's peformance may be counted a good one. Lochiela ran one of her best races and finished generously. On the strength of her running at Awapuni last week Passive was strongly backed for the Racing Club Handicap. The Lethe mare ran fourth, but was unable to re-produce her Manawatu form.

The winning sires at the meeting were: Merriwee, three wins; Birkenhead, San Fran, Stepniak and Merrie England, two each; Eton, Knight Errant; Royal Artillery, Mauser and Son-of-a-Gun, one each.

The moat successful trainers were: M. McGrath, four wins; J. McLaughlin, J. Ayers, J. W.. Lowe and J. Gravestock, two each; G. Pritchard/J. Gelhor, F. Higgott and J. Maher, one each.
