FIRES.
By Telegraph—Press Association. DANNEVIRICE, January 3. About 6 o'clock on Saturday night a fire occurred in premises occupied by J. J. Patterson, solicitor, R. G. Paterson and Co., land and estate agents and accountants, and Wylie and Co., grocers. The fire apparently started in the office of J. J. Patterson, through some unknown cause, and obtained a firm hold in that portion of the building, and spread to the upper storey. The brigade quickly subdued the flames, although a gale was blowing and serious damage was anticipated. R. G. Paterson and Co. suffer through water, and Wylie and Co. lose about £2O through water. The premises are in the estate of J. J. Paterson, bankrupt, and the business of Wylie and Co. belongs to the estate of r'. G. Paterson and Co. CHRISTCHURCH, January 3. An old wooden two-storey building used as a Chinese laundry was totally destroyed by fire at 2.15 o'clock this morning. The occupants, two Chinese, just got out in time. The building was owned by T. Dixon, and was insured in the South British Office for £l5O. NAPIER, January 3. The buildings destroyed were those occupied by the "East Coast Mail" newspaper, damage done about £800; Ch'-jpman, draper, damage, about £S00; Broad and Tristram, chemists, damage not stated; and Holt, builder, damage about £I,OOO. Nothing was saved and the total damage is estimated at £7,000. There was a change of wind at about 3 o'clock, otherwise the destruction would have been much greater.
