A GRAVE OUTLOOK
BOTH SIDES DETERMINED
By Telegraph —Press Association. REEFTON, January 2. A conference between miners and owners took place to-day, but proved abortive. The mine owners stated that if the government Insurance Department or my other insurance company took risks for, say, rive years they would insure, but wuuld insist 0:1 medical examination. The men are determined to oppose ihe same. The Federation is trying to induce the Government Insurance Department to insure the miners. i (i A special general meeting of miners will be held to night to discuss the position. There is an effectual deadlock at Reefton. Neither side would give way. No work will take place on Monday. Six hundred men will be idle. •REEFTON, January 3. A meeting of three hundred miners was held last night, but was not open to the Presd. It is understood that the delegates of the Federation of Miners and the committee reported that no agreement had been come to with the employers. Messrs Colvin. M.P., and P. J* O'Regan addressed the meeting. Ultimately it was decided that no member of the Union should go to work to-morrow. The mines affected are the Progress, Globe, New Big River, Keep-it-Dark, Energetic, Wealth of Nations, New Ulster, St. George, Big River, Welcome Syndicate. Ail the battery hands also will not go to work. It is calculated that six hundred miners directly employed in the mines will be affected. Great indignation is expressed against the Government.
