IK cable menage received from Ijakutta states that the Viceroy's Cup, the chief turf event of the year in India, was won by Wandin, Absentee being second, and Bantock third;* TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). In disqualifying Passive in the Grandstand Handicap for 31bs overweight not having been declared, the
; Stewards of the Manawatu Racing ' Club certainly did not err on the side of leniency. After reading the rule relating to overweights, I am of the opinion that, in ordinary sportsmanlike fairness, the judge's verdict need not have been altered under the
' special circumstances, and taking into consideration the latter part of the rule on the subject. Rule 24, clause 9, reads as follows:—"If any horse earry more than 21bs overweight in a flat race, or 41bs in a hurdle race or steeplechase, which has not bsen duly declared, it shall be disqualified for the race unless the Stewards are satisfied that such ex« cess has been caused by wet." Now j this matter of "wet" directly applies I
to the winner of the race. Passive, who when entering a contest, is a most profuse sweater. After being saddled up for the race she wen, the Lethe mare was sweating from head to feet, and the amount of moisture that quickly permeated the saddlecloth, girths, saddle and bridle woald most, undoubtedly, account for at least the extra pound through which the disqualification was inflicted, , Sportsmen throughout the Wairarapa and Forty Mile Bush districts are in sympathy with Mr Vincent, owner,, and A. Godfrey, trainer, over the unfortunate occurrence, as they had no occasion to declare overweight, not evident when the rider was weighed out. Should such a matter of overweight come before racing club stewards in the future, it is to be hoped that a broader view of the question will be ( taken, so that no injustice may be done to innocent parties. •By winning races during tiie past week the following horses have incurred penalties in their engagements at Tauherenikau :—Tumut, Tupono, Diplomatic, Lenda, Knight Commander, Waipaku, Sandstream, Silken Rein, Prism, Thera, Peroiina, Purakau, Swallow, Skye and Oblivion. .
Nearly all the horses eagaged at Tauherenikau on Friday have arrived at the scene of action. The course is in splendid order, and the arrangements in connection with the meeting are very complete. Good average fields will be seen out during the day, and the racing is sure to be full of interest. It is expected that eight will start for the Cup, the principal event, and the contestants will include recent wirners in Silken Rein. Sand&tream, Waipaku, Moloch and Prism, while Sunbonnet, Abbrig ; nal, White Lie and Merrie Rose are capable of - making the best of them gallop. Considerable!interest will be manifested in the Nursery Handicap, for two year olds, as some high-class juveniles will be seyn out under the colours. . Tainui, winner of the Hack Scurry at Martin borough, was trained by H. C. McPhee, of Masterton, who sltnough he hadonlyhad the Strathbr a '. mare in hand a few weeks, effected a/ great improvement in her condition/ The penalties incurred and weights to be carried by recent winners that are engaged at the Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting are as follow:—Tuhitarata Handicap—7lbs, 9.7; l Tupono, 71bs, 8.1; Rimutaka Hack—Diploma* ic, 71bs, 7.6; Lerida, Knight Commander, 71b?, 7.0/ Pukio Hack—Thera, 12!bs, 8 9; .Perolina, 71bs, 8.4; Purakau, 71bs, g/O; Swallow, 7lbs, 7.12. Reynolds/ Welter— Skye, 71bs, 9.2. Mokrfi WelterOblivion, Tibs, 9.0; K/hight Commander, 71bs, 8.12. / Following are for the Wairarapa Cup,/ to be run tomorrow : Waipaku S/.9; Sandstream, 8.5; Silken Rein, 7/12; Prism, 7.4.
Mr J. E. Henrys must have been duly impressed at the form shown by the Conqueror mare, Waipaku, when she won the Ashhurst Cup on Tuesday, as he increased their weigt't in the Wairarapa Cup by 10'bs, whereas Silken Rein and Sandstream, have/only to carry 71b.-, and Prism 51 bs more. The English-bred filly, Perolinn, by the King's horse. Persimmon, has been accepted for in the Pukio flack Handicap, to be fun at Tauherenikau to morrow. She is spoken of as a fine big filly, showing plenty 0/ quality, and considerable interest is sure to be evinced in her running. St. Charles and Afterthought were brought back from Martinborough yesterday, and may not be starters at the. Wairarapa meeting this week-
Class is represented in the Maiden Race at Tauherenikau by the Birkenhead colt Rock Ferry and Te Ru., Gaelic is showing signs of having a cold, and unless he makes a quick recovery may not be a starter in the Wairarapa Cup.
