CARTERTON.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The Christmas Holidays are passing off quietly, picnics being the chief form of attraction. The shops did a good Christmas trade, although there was no particular rush to the town, country settlers being too busy on the farms at this time of the year, and are making hay while the sun shines. Tenders were invited amongst shareholders of the Terminating Building Society for a £3OO appropriation. The successful tenderer was Mr T. M. Apiin, uf Carterton, at £SB 10s, equal to 19£ per cent. Nine hundred and fifty cases of cheese manufactured at the local cooperative factories has just been forwarded from Carterton to Wellington for shipment to London by the a.s. Waiwera, which sails from Wellington on the 31st instant. If to this is added the cheese sent from Carterton proprietary factories the value of this shipment to Carterton will be found to be close on £4,000. Shipments of cheese approximating, the Waiwera's lot are leaving Carterton every fortnight for the British market. There is a proposal to close the Carterton shops on Friday and Saturday, January Ist and 2nd. This would give the assistants a holiday frpm Thursday night to Monday morning, and it has been well earned.
