THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. MONDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1908. THE HOLIDAYS.

The holidays just concluded have passed away very successfully, and it is gratifying to be able to remark that there has been practically a complete absence of serious accidents, which sometimes are painfully , evident on the occasion of public festivals. The weather was not too propitious on Christmas Day, but as that day is observed) more as a Sunday than as a holiday by a very large section of the public the inclemency of the elements in no way prevented religious devotions being attended to, and the taking place of reunions of families, a custom that is not only beautiful as an idea, but one that has been productive of an inestimable amount of good. There are thousands, countless thousands, who will look back to Christmas, 1908, with feelings of unalloyed pleasure, arid will recognise in the

festival something much deeper, truer, and more spiritual than a mere convivialgathering. With the arrival of Boxing Day came an improvement in the weather, a change much appreciated by holiday-makers everywhere. Throughout the Dominion Boxing Day appears to have been thoroughly enjoyed, and the many telegrams received in regard to sports gatherings of various kinds make it clear that even if the country is passing through a "slump" period the people are not at all inclined to be either melancholy or to close up their pockets where matters of sport are concerned. The passing reference to the state of trade leads us on to remark that we learn «>ith pleasure that business was very brisk in Masterton and other Wairarapa towns for several days prior to the commencement of the holidays, and that there is a general consensus of opinion amongst business people that trade is rapidly on the mend, and that with the advent of the New Year a very much better time .is in store than has prevailed for some, time past.
