MAURICEVILLE SPORTS.
ANNUAL GATHERING. (Special Reporter). The twenty-eighth annual gathering of the Mauriceville Athletic Society was held on the Athletic Grounds in splendid weather on Saturday last. There was a good attendance of the public, though not quite u» to the previous gatherings held by the Society. Owing to the large entries in several of the events some keen finishes were witnessed. Race 3 for children were held at intervals,for which substantial prizes were given. During the day appropriate selections were capably rendered by the Hastwell Band, which were much appreciated. All the arrangements in connection with the gathering were a complete success, and everything passed off very smoothly. The stewards of the various departments carried out their work in a capable manner, special praise being due to the secretary (Mr Chas. tfrooks) for the assiduous way in which he worked to ensure the suecess achieved. The guessing competition, the weight of two sheep which were to be killed and dressed, centered a deal of interest. The result of the competition will be known on Wednesday. The following are the results of the various events : Mauriceville Handicap, 100 yards —L. Alzdorf, syds, 1; W. Bannister, 10yds, 2; V. M. Richards, 6yds, 3. Boys' Race—A. Robins 1, P. McCarthy 2. Ladies' Handicap Quoits Match (local) Miss Gardner 1, Mrs Braggins 2. Light-weight Wrestling, Match (Cumberland style)—W. Biggins 1, N. White 2. Mauriceville, Handicap, 220 yd—sJ. White, lldys, 1; V. M. Richards, 9yd», 2; W. Bannister, 18yds.
Ticket Race, lOOyards—This race caused a considerable amount of interest, there being no less than fortyone competitors, and was won by N. White, carrying W. Lozell's ticket.
Married Women's Race—Mrs Hopley 1, Mrs Fisher 2. Farmers' Race (local)—A. Clarke 1, R. McKenzie 2. Half-mile Race—L. Alzdorf, 15yds, 1; D. J. Clow, 50yds, 2. Ladies' Nail-driving Competition —Mrs Braggins 1, Mrs P. Jensen 2. Mauriceville Handicap, 440 yards— L. Alzdorf, 10yds, 1; W. White, 25 yds, 2. Heavy-weight Wrestling Match (Cumberland style)—Moana Paratena 1, W. Higgins 2. Ticket Race—W. White, carrying J. Thrupp's ticket, 1. One Mile Race —Owing to insufficient entries being received this event was not run.
Tilting-in-the-Ring—L. McLachlan 1, D. Manning 2.
Running High Jump—J. Isackson, 4ft llin. 1; R.Faulkner, 4ft lOin, 2. Wrestling Match (Catch-as-'Uitch-can)— Moana Paratena 1, W. Higgins 2.
