THE AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
By Telegraph—Press Association. ELTHAM,, December 26. The results of the Axemen's Carnival were as follow : New Zealand Championship—First heat: D. Pretty, 1; J. Newstroski, 2; G. McCauk-y, 3. Second heat: C. Miley, 1; E. Pretty, 2; W. L. Herold, 3; Third heat: J. Hartnet, 1; J. Harwood, 2; G. Bucklowsky, 3. Pinal: D. Pretty, .1; Newstroski, 2; E. Pretty, 3. Time, 3min 3 2-ssec. C. Miley (the Australasian champion) never looked like winning. The double-handed sawing championship of Australasia resulted:— Johansen arid Johmton, 1; Beckham and Osborne, 2; Casey and Pretty,. 3. Time, 23,4-ssec. The World's Championship Chop—D. Pretty (Hamilton), 1; S.John-' son (Gisbornfi), 2; G. McCauley (Taumerunui);, 3; J. Newstroski, 4.. A feature of this contest was the powerful chopping of R. D. Pretty and the excellent performance of; Johnson, who, though he struck a knot, and spoiled two axes, chopped into second place. Johnson is a Tasmanian, who won a few minor events there, and started in New Zealand, wood two years ago. Miley struck hard wood and was left behind. Time, 4rr>in 48 2-ssec, comparatively slow. The wood was hard. Underhand Handicap.—G. Puklowsky, 30sec, 1; G. Jolly, 40sec, 2; J. Neal, 35sec, 3; J. Deegan, 25sec, 4. Time, lmin 19 3-ssec. In the third heat Miley was competing, but the handicap was too big and fce did not finish. Two-feet Singie-Handed Sawing; Handicap.—A. E. Sullivan, 20sec„ l; G. A. Puklowsky, 20sec, 2; D.
