BOROUGH GAS COMMITTEE.

At a meeting of the Borough Gas and Library Committee held on Monday evening there were present:— Crs Elliott (in the chair), Ewington, Haughey, Morris and Pragiull. The Gas Manager submitted a report dated the 21st day of December, together with his carbonising statement for the month of November, which were received and adopted. Arising thereout the Committee decided to ask that the Chairman be empowered to open tenders for trenching the extension of the South road; that telephonic communication be established with the new gasworks site, subject to one-third of the cost for one year as agreed being borne and paid by the contractors, Messrs Coradine and WhittaKer; that the specification providing for salt-glazed stone water pipes for the sewage drains be adhered to; that the gasworks staff be paid up to Thursday next subject to satisfactory arrangements being made with the treasurer. The Committee recommended that tho agreement with the Railway authorities on this subject be executed under the Common Seal of the Borough Council.

The Committee also recommended that debentures for the second £3,000 for this loan be -executed under the Common Seal of the Borough for issue as the sums payable accrue under the covenant with the Wellington Harbour Board. It was decided to recommend that the Borough Valuer be appointed arbitrator on behalf of the Borough on the question of the taking of the new gasworks site abutting on George street under the Public Works Act.

Accounts totalling £602 4s 2d were passed for payment. A report of the Librarian for the month of November was submitted and received.

The Council adopted the report after a discussion on an amendment to allow the contractors for the new gasworks to use at his option concrete pipes for the drainage, the amendment being negatived.
