CHARGE OF CATTLE STEALING.
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. ' NAPIER, December 21. Samuel Beswick pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to-day to a • charge of stealing 90 head of cattle, valued at £406, the property of Richard Keene and Jamea Reid. Accused, who was appointed manager of the Runanga st?tion during the owners' absence in England, sold the cattle to butchers. When arrested by a detective, prisoner admitted his guilt and offered assistance in tracing the missing cattle. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, being admitted to bail in his personal recognisance for £250, and two sureties •of £125 each. William Robinson was charged •With on November 13th receiving from Samuel Beswick ten head of cattle, knowing them to have been stalen. Sub-Inspector Dwyer applied for a remand, stating that accused had only been arrested at the luncheon adjournment of the Court. Mr Cresswell, who appeared for -accused, said that Robinson was a well-known settler, and had resided in Hawke's Bay lor 40 years. He had recently sold out and removed his stock to Tauranga, employing a man named Boult as his drover. That 'Was how the trouble had arisen. Accused was remanded on bail. William Boult was charged with on December 15th at Runanga receiving from Samuel Beswick 44 head of cattle valued at £l9B, the property of Ricnard Keene and James Reid, knowing them to have been stolen. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial. William Brewer, charged with stealing 44 cattle from Runanga station, was remanded till to-morrow.
