CHEAP CABLES.
For purposes of social intercourse we might almost as well be without cable communication on account of the high rates charged. Parents and children separated by the width of half the world have to wait for six weeks for news of each other, and often suffer much needless anxiety which would be promptly allayed, and perhaps avoided altogether, if they were able to communicate with each other by cable at a reasonable rate. That cheaper cable communication will have the effect of keeping and increasing trade within the Empire there ia not the slightest doubt. Sir Joseph Ward has shown himself in sympathy with the movement, and we hope, remarks the Christchurch "Press," that, with the co-operation of the various Governments concerned, may soon be found, if not of attaining Mr Henniker Heaton's ideal, at any rate of going a considerable distance in that direction.
