(Prom Our Resident Reporter.) Monday. MANGATAINOKA SPORTS. The new innovator), the dancing ' contests, are creating great interest, and the Society have deemed it advisable \o extend the time for receiving nominations until the morning of the sport:-. Up till the present eleven competitors have nominated. Mr F. W. May, brother of Constable May, who holds the Australasian championship for fancy dancing (holding no le.-'6 than 27 cups and numerous medals) will be present and give an exhibition of fancy dancing during the ai'urnoon. Mr May will not be a competitor in any of the-contests, and this exhibition will help to make Boxing Day a "Red Letter Day" for Mangatainoka. The Secretary, Mr Walsh desires to acknowledge donations from the following:—Wairarapa Age 10s, W. Tosswill £1 is, Major Bolton £2, J. Y. Crawford £1 Is, Father McKenna 10s 6d, W. PONGAROA S.M. COURT. The petition against the election of Councillors for the Pongaroa Riding of the Akitio County Council was heard by Mr James, S.M., on Friday, the 11th inst. The petitioners contended—(l) That the voting papers supplied to the electors were not in form as prescribed by the "Local Elections and Polls Act, 1908. (2) The Returning Officer, when giving notice of the poll, appointed a day for nominations of candidates more than seven days before the election. (3) That certain persons recorded their votes who were not entitled to vote; and (4) the names of certain persons were added to the electoral roll after the same had been signed by the Magistrate. It appeared that the voting, papers stated that the election was for one councillor, whereas two were required. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate declared the election void, on the above grounds, and ord red the £lO deposit to be returned/to the petitioners, and costs aniouijting to £4 5s were allowed against the Returning Officer. According to the Act, a fresh election must take place wiihin twenty-five days.
On Sunday afternoon the local Brass Band rendered a select programme of music in the Square. Every member of the Band (19) was present. No less than ten selections were rendered, and the piece "Gems from Sir Henry Bishop" was specially well rendered, and Bandmaster Treszie is to be complimented on bringing the Band up to such a satisfactory standard, especially as several members have only joined the Band within the last few months. The caretaker of the Pahiatua Bowling Club (Mr Mcßratney) has the Club's green in good order, and some interesting games should be witnessed. Mr /Mcßratney has charge of the local tennis courts, whichadjoin the bowling green, and they are also in tip-top condition. One of the largest congregations seen for many months assembled in the Presbyterian .Church on Sunday night, and listened to an impressive sermon by the Rev. Chalmers Mill. During the evening Mr W. Dowling, of Wellington, contributed the wellknown sacred solo "Nearer My God to Thee," which was well rendered. Mr Dowling will take part in the cantata "Bethlehem" on Friday evening. A tennis tournament is to be held at the School Court on Wednesday afternoon. Arrangements for the complimentary social to be tendered to Mr J. C. Cooper on Thursday night next are well in hand, and a final meeting of the committee will be held to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Mesers Donald and Eastwood, one of the local, firms of motor agents. are running their car to Wanganui to-morrow morning, starting about 4 a.m., and taking a car load of pruminaut local sports'to witness the much-talked of boat race, and will return after the race is over. I am in receipt.of.a handsome wall calendar and perfume satchet from Mr E. Ross, chemist, of this town. Mr Paget, manager of the Scarborough Creamery, informs me that a daily supply of between 2,500 and 1,600 gallons of milk is delivered to the creamery daily. The average test is 3.6. A grain store is attached, and oats, wheat, barley and flour are stored for the benefit of the shareholders of the Ballarce Company.
