STOWAWAYS FROM THE EAST.
£ CUNNING DEVICE EXPOSED;
WHAT THE SHIPPERS WERE
TO RECEIVE,
SYDNEY, December 12
It transpires that communication with the stowaways aboard the steamer Eastern from Japan and Hongkong 1 was established by sawing through the flooring between the Chinese passengers' quarters and the hold. The opening was carefully concealed, but an officer passing noticed a small saw mark. It is understood that ths shippers of the stowaways are Chinese members of the crew, and wera to divide £BO for each stowaway safely landed in Australia.
The steamer arrived in Sydney on the 4th instant. Twenty Chinese, presenting a loathsome sight, were discovered huddled together in small recesses made in the cargo in No. 1 hold, and were locked up pending their return to Hongkong.
