WOODVILLE RACES

SECOND DAY'S RESULTS

By Telegraph—Press Association. WOODVILLE, December 10.

The races for the second day of the Woodville Summer Meeting were run in a howling gale, but luckily rain kept off. The attendance was very satisfactory and the sum of £6,395 was put through the totalisator, making a total of £14,315 for the meeting, which is £5,000 less than for the corresponnding meeting of last year.

Only three buokmakers paid for the privilege of doing business on the course, but a number of them were busy in the paddock adjoining. The starting by Mr O'Connor was again a feature of the meeting, every race being got off with an evenness that was astonishing. Results: — Stewards' Handicap Shannon Lass, 7.7, 1; Lochiela, 7.7, 2; Contour, 7.13. 3. All started. The whole of the 1 horses were almost buncheJ at the winning post, the verdict being given to Shannon Lass by half a length, a head separating second and "third horses. Time, 1 min 17 l-ssec. This was a bplendid race, a number of the horses had a say when all were fairly in the straight. In front of the stand Woodhey was leading, but Iranui came at her in a wonderful manner, and was landed a winner by a bare half length. Time, lmin 57 3-ssec.

Telegraph Hack—Longner, 7.13, 1; Cute, 8.7, 2; Remission, 6.9, 3. Stylish was scratched. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 2 3-ssec.

High weight—Loiret, 8.12, 1; Lethean, 8.9, 2; Aberration, 10.0, 3. This was a most exciting finish, Loiret winning by a neck, half a length separating second and third. Time, lmin 44 4-ssec.

NOTES

(By "Zetland.")

Good racing was again witnessed at Woodville yesterday. The course was in exceptionally good order after the rain that fell the previous evening, and the attendance was again satisfactory. Shannon Lass accounted for the Stewards' Hack m good style Irom Lochiela, who ran better than on Wednesday. The winner, who had run second to Longner in the Maiden on the first day, showed her consistency, and will be useful during the season.

In the Second Hurdles, Master Douglas managed l to defeat Don Carlos, and a good field. The pair reversed the first days running, and practically monopolised the bulk of the betting. The result of the Ruahine Welter was somewhat of a surprise, the Workman—Seal gelding, Sealer, winning a nice race from the favourite, Roselethe, and six others. Sealer is owned hy Mr A. W. Cave, one of our most popular sportsman, who was heartily congratulated on the win. The winner was turned out in solid condition by M. McGrath. The Hon. J. D. Ormond's Woodhey was made favourite for the Summer Handicap, but in « K ood finish had to give way to Iranui. The Soult mare, who recently scored at Taratahi and Blenheim, is decidedly speedy up to nine* furlongs, and as J. Lowe is capable of keeping his charges well, she should add to her winning total as the season goes on. Forar was again evident in the Telegraph Handicap, for iLongner, wir.ner of the Maiden, scored from Cute. Longner is by The Officer, and is speedy as well as being a weight carrier.

Tumut improved on his first day's running, when he was rather badly placed, by winning the Railway Handicap from the brilliant Naumai, Lothair, Stylish, and two others. The Merriwee gelding has been a good stake earner for the McGrath stable, for during the year he has scored at Tauherenikau, Otaki, Masterton, Taratahi and Woodville. Yesterday's win was his first' in open company. In a field of fifteen for the Hack Scurry, Miscast, by Birkenhead, won from Kimmerian, the sister to Full Rate.

The meeting concluded with the High Weight, which was won by Loiret, who had been withdrawn from the Summer Handicap. Lethean again ran prominently, and finished in second place. Aberration was well fancied for this race, but had rather the worst of the weights with lOst.
