MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING:
HEADMASTER'S REPORT.
The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held in the Secretary's office last evening. There were present,—Messrs R. Brown (chairman), H. O'Leary, E. H. Waddington, J. Carpenter, W. H, Jackson, .A. W. Chapman, and G. Town^nd.
Leave of absence was granted to Messrs H. H. Cork, C, Perry, and Rev. J. N. Buttle. The Treasurer reporter] a credit, balance at the bank of £53 63 lOd,. but cheques amounting to £5 193 9d were shown as outstanding against; this am-jur.t.
A ktter was received from the Committee of the new Lansdowne-. School, suggesting that the boundaries for the new schnol district'be as follows:—South and east, the Ruamahanga River; south and west, the Waipoua River; and the north boundary to be the present Masterton School district. —On the motion of Mr Townsend, the proposed boundaries were approved of. Accounts amounting to £l2 18s. Id were passed for payment. In connection with the proposed dressmaking classes under the regulations laid down, the secretary was instructed to inform the Department that the Committee were unable to secure a teacher to comply with suckv regulations, and to ask the Board to refer the matter of securing ' a teacher for the district to the j| Education Department.

The month y report of the Headmaster, Mr W. H. Jackson, read as follows:—Attendance. Main School percentage of attendance, 93. Side School —191; average attendance,. 178; percentage of attendance, 93. Secondary Classes—9s; ' average attendance, 89; percenage of attendance, 94. There has been an excellent attendance for the month, and 1 have no absentee report to pre sent. The Board's Truant Officer paid a visit to the school this week. He made one or two domiciliary visits, but with these exceptions there were no cases needing his attention. I have just completed the annual promotion examination of the school, in accordance with the Education Department's regulations. Very few scholars have failed to obtain promotion. In nearly every case of failure poor attendance has been the cause. The three cadet corps of the school have been inspected thi* week by Colonel Loveday, Commandant of Public School Cadet Corps. He speaks very highly of the drill and discipline of the boys. I have been notified by the Board that the request made by .me for furniture of modern type for the new room has been accaded to, and an order placed for its manufacture. I have consulted with the Borough Engineer regarding the proposed asphalting in the boys' playeround. He has promised to do the work before the end of the term holiday, if his street macadamising operations will permit him, to do so. The term vacation, of six weeks, will comence on Monday, the 21st inst. —The* report was adopted..^
