AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
;NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION NEW EXECUTIVE SET UP.
Delegates from Southern Otago and Wellington centres of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association attended a conference held at Christchurch on Saturday morning, called to consider the action of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Association, in respect to nominations to the Council and the refusal to the protests of dissatisfied centres to an Australian Union.
Mr A. A. Paape (Southland) presided, and a resolution was passed, on the motion of the Wellington centre, declaring that as no constitutional body controlling amateur athletics at present exists, the New Zealand Conference, representing thirty-ssven clubs, proceed to establish an executive,*and to adopt such other measures as may be deemed expedient for the welfare of amateur athletics in the Dominion. The proposal was agreed to on the motiun of Mr Davies and Mr Coffey (Wellington). It was stated that though Auckland was not represented, yet that centre was in sympathy with the object of the Conference. It was decided, "That it having been unanimously confirmed by this Conference of centres of. delegates, that no Amateur Athletic Council exists, this Conference, by resolution, appoints Messrs F. W. Larkin, W. Coffey, A. Davies, A. Marryatt, Dawson, F. Ross, J. H. Pollock and R. W. McVilly and De Newman and the Presidents of thr various' centres, the Executive to hold office until the next Conference uf delegates from centres, and to act as a governing body, and that the delegates present pledge the Clubs affiliated to the centres they represent to acknowledge such Executive as the sole governing body existing in New Zealand." It was further decided that the newly-appointed .Executive be requested to furnish the Australasian Amateur Athletic Union with a report detailing the present administration of amateur athletics in New Zealand, and that the Australian Amateur Athleti Union be requested to officially recognise the newly-appointed Executive as the governing body of amateur athletics in New Zealand. All the powers conferred on the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association Council were, by resolution, given to the Executive.
Southland were awarded the championship meeting for 1909, which will probably be held at Gore.
