INTERESTING SHOW COMPETITION.
FOK MASTERTON 1909 SHOW.
BEST DAIRY COW.
WINNER AN EXCEPTIONAL ANIMAL.
•The competition for the best dairy cow in connection with the Mastertoa A. and P. Association's next Show (in Ferbuary) has attracted considerable interest this year, sixteen entries, covering a wide district, having been received. The last of the tests were completed yesterday and the results compiled by the Secretary, Mr G. R: Sykes. The conditions attaching to the competition were ' detailed by the General Committee as follow:—A steward will be appointed to each competing cow, who will personalis* attend the night before the test is taken to see her stripped out satisfactorily. On the following day he will again attend to see her milked night and morning, under normal conditions. H«. will weigh the milk and! take a sample each time, which will be sealed in the presence of the owner, and subsequently delivered to the Secretary of the Association for the purpose of testing and computing the calculations. One point is allowed for every pound of milk, ten points for each percentage 'of butter and one point for every ten days pver the first fourteen and: up to one hundred and twenty days after calving. The result of the testing will be printed in the Catalogua of the Show. Owners of prize-winning animals will be notified to bring their cows to the Show, but other owners need not*bring theirs. Any prize won by an animal not present will bos forfeited.
All animals competing 'in this class to be fed on ordinary pasture, ,and any artificial feeding will disqualify the animal. The following table gives complete details of the points awarded in the competition, the first three named animals biing the prize-winners:—
The prizes in the competition were £5 for first prize, £3 for second, and £2 for third. The first prize animal'is, as can be seen by the points secured by it, an exceptionally tine dairy cow, and is a Jersey cross. Last year the first prize animal secured only 113.7 points —s3Jib, 5.7 test. The second prize cow is alsoia Jersey cross, the third and fourth prize animals being Shorthorn cross.
The Association is indebted to Mr J. Windle, manager of the Masterton Dairy Factory, for computing the tests.
