PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent). PAHIATUA, December 3. The annual sale of work in connection with St. Mark's Church was started in the Library Hall, Mangataincka, on Wednesday afternoon, the proceedings being opened by Mr D. Crewe (Mayor). The hall was well filled with clothing and produce, and numerous side shows were also held for the amusement of young and old. The following ladies and gentlemen took part ia the various stallri: —Clothing stall— Mesdames Barrell, Chatwin, and Vowel!. Fancy stall —Miss Barrel!. Produce—Mesdames Bolton and Gillespie. Christmas tree and bran tub — Mesdames Luke and King and Miss A. Vowell,, Sweets and Flowers — Misses Bolton (2) and M. May. Refreshments —Mesdames Ebbett and Bayliss and Misses May, Petrie, Cade and Vowell. Shooting Gallery —Mr A. Beetham. Guessing Competitions—Stella Barrell ana Mr Montgomerie. Nail driving Competition—Mr McTavish. The sale is continuing to-day (Thursday). Mr E. Baucke has resigned his position as a Borough Councillor, and an election to fill the" vacancy wili take place on December 21st. A movement is on hand to establish a branch of the Y.M.G.A. in this I town.
The committee of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society have just had a fine grandstand completed on the Sports Grounds. The building will hold 200 people, and will be greatly appreciated by the visiting public. It is intended not to charge for admission on Boxinp Day. Great interest is being taken in the dancing and pipe competitions, and the pipers, dressed in costume, will inarch from the railway station to the Domain. For the other events, entries are being received from all parts of the Dominion,, and the meeting promises to be one of the most successful gatherings in the North Island. Entry forms and further information may be obtained from the secretary (Mr J. A. Walsh). The adjourned meeting of the Forty Mile Bush . Athletic Society will be held at Hamua on Saturday evening.
It is proposed by several of Mr J. C. Cooper's supporters to tender that gentleman a complimentary social at an early date. A social will be held in the Presbyterian Church this evening (Friday), when the prizes won by the Sunday school children during the year will be pre ierited to them. Four rinks of Masterton bowlers journeyed here yesterday and played a friendly game with the local bowlers. The visitors spoke with admiration of the excellence of green, which was in splendid condition. A bountiful supply of dainty refreshments were provided by lady friends, and the following ladies attended to the wants of the bowlersMesdames Hewatt, Clarke and Ransom, and the Misses Hughes (3), and Burgess. At the conclusion of the match, Mr Dupre, on behalf of the visitors, heartily thanked the local Club for their hospitality, and although beaten, hoped to soon again meet the Pahiatua Club on the Masterton green. The following are the scores: —Pahiatua—Messrs Petherick, Levin, Hughes and Mcßratney (skip), 45; Masterton—Messrs Townsend, Jones, Richards and Cochrane( skip), 13. Masterton —Messrs Leatham, Feist, Blinkhorne, Dupre (skip), 26; Pahiatua—Messrs Boagey, Burgess, Norton, Hawkins (skip), 24. Masterton—Messrs J. Smith, Wingate, Prentice, Whittaker (skip), 21; Pahiatua Messrs Clark, Mitchell, Ransom, Hewatt (skip), 18. Masterton—Messrs Mutrie, Rigg, Scott (skip), 26; Pahiatua — Messrs Weston, Wills, Wakeraan (skip), 15. Grand totals-Pahiatua 102; Masterton, 86.
