COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL EVENING.
AN OLD SETTLER FETED

The farewell social to Mr H. Sedcole took place on Tuesday evening, the Mayor (Mr D. Crewe) presiding. A good programme of vocal items wasjgiven, the following ladies and gentlemen taking part:—Miss Dunning (encored), Messrs J. J. Boagey, C. Mills (encored), F. Storey, W. H. Hawkins (encored), W. A. Boagey, H. Sedcole (encored), and a Scotch dance by Mr W. Watts. The Mayor (Mr Crewe) in a humorous speech detailed the trails and troubles of Mr Sedcole's early days in 'Pahiatua, which dated back twentyfive years ago. The guest of the evening had been a member of the first Road Board formed, and always studied his fellow settlers before himMr Alex Reece mentioned that had donated the sites for present Borough Council Chambers and Library Buildings, and the Salvation Army Barracks. Mr J. D. Wilson stated that through the generosity of Mr Sedcole, a flagpole had been erected in the Borough square. _ _ Mr W. H. Hawkins said that Mr Sedcole was practically the "Father ot Pahiatua, and the No License party were losing a staunch friend. $ Mr W. Tosswill spoke of the great help Mr Sedcole had always given to athletic societies, and Mr V. Mekalick eulogised Mr Sedcole s sterling qualities as a citizen. Mr D. Crewe then presented Mr Sedcole with a purse of sovereigns, and a handsome illuminated address, signed by the prominent citizens of the town, and Mr Tosswill also presented an address from the Pahiatua Amusement Club. Mr Sedcole feelingly responded. After refreshments (supplied by Mr A. East) had been handed round, the of "Auld Lang Syne" brought the social to a close.
Bros. G. Gelderd and T. Gore, of Court Pahiatua, A.0.F., left by yesterday's express to attend the Friendly Societies' Council in Wellington. . An old and respected settler, in the person of Mr Robert W. Thompson, passed away at his son's residence, Nikau, on Tuesday last. Deceased had been in the Dominion for 54 years, and served in the Maori war. He leaves two sons (both of this district), and one daughter, in Tolago Bay.
