A UNIQUE POINT.

A unique point has arisen in connection with the Maori election held to-day. The local publicans were advised that under section 115 of the Electoral Act they would be compelled to close their bars from noon, a Maori election coming within the category"any election" in that section, All the Gisborne hotels,, with one exception, where the licensee was advised differently, have accordingly closed.. It is pointed out that if this new reading of the law be correct, shops should also close, but they have not done so 1 . In the South Island, which is one of the Maori electorates, the whole of the hotels would also be required to shut up their bars.

EASTERN MAORI SEAT. VOTING AT MASTERTON. The was a small record of votes at the Masterton polling booth at the Courthouuse, at Which Mr Norman H.James acted as deputy returning officer. Only seventy-four votes were recorded, the poll closing at four o'clock in the afternoon. Mr Tai Te Tau acted as scrutineer on behalf of Mr Ngata,. Mr Park being unrepresented. MR NGATA RETURNED. A BIG MAJORITY. Mr Tai Te Tau received the following telegram last evening from Mr Ngata:— Results at ninety-one polling places:— Ngata 4181 Park 1529 There are sixteen returns to come. The probable majority will be about 2,600. By Telegraph—Press Association. GISBORNE, December 2. With eighteen returns to come, Mr Ngata has an assured victory for the Eastern Ma«ri seat, the voting being:—Ngata, 4,136; Park, 1,481.

OTHER SEATS. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, December 2. The results to hand of the voting for other Maori members of the Housa of Representatives are as follows: — Northern District.
