CRICKET NOTES.

(By Cover Point.) £ CARLTON v. CARTERTON. ] The Carlton and Carterton senior teams commenced a Wairarapa Cricket Association championship match at Carterton on Saturday on a good wicket and in fine weather. • Carterton went in first to bat. They did not commence well, having "one wicket down for 9, and 2 ior 27. However, thanks to the splendid play of Moss, Swan, T. #-• Hoar, Styles, Lett and Voyee, the respectable total of 176 was put up before the last wicket fell. r R. Moss was top scorer with 64. His innings was certainly the best seen on the Carterton ground for many seasons. He did not give a chance, or anything suggesting a chance. He played correct cricket, and scored freely all round the wicket. His hitting was clean and ; crisp, and brought forth' warm applause from the onlookers." As showing what a powerful hitter Moss is, his score included eight 4's and seven 3's. Several of the hits went clean out of the ground. Moss has played some very fine innings during the time he has been a member of the Carlton club, but none to equal his batting on Saturday. Swan came out of his shell with an exhibition of batting that he lias certainly not excelled in Wairaiapt His innings was a particularly attractive one, and his wrist work and leg glances were magnificent. His score included seven 3's and one 4. Swan's dismissal was brought about by Beechey, who effected a | beautiful catch off his own bowling. T. Hoar was the next highest. scorer with 22, and he led tlia field 'I a lively dance. He hit hard .and" often, and ran up his score in a very short time. His score included two 4's. Styles (15) plapcd steadily for his runs, as did Voyee (11), while Lett (13) hit out vigorously while at the wickets. Carterton fielded well. Phelps was the most successful of the six bowlers tried. Carterton were amable to do anything with tihe bowling of Moss, and at the close of play had lost six of their wickets for 52, of which Moss had .taken -5 for 24. Moss was particularly unplayable, and fully justified -what had been claimed for ihim —that he is the besi bowler "Wairarapa has seen for many a day.' Most- 03 the runs were eff him by Carterton were from lucky snicks. The following were the scores : CARLTON.—F irst Innings. SwaD, c and b Beechey 38 L. Boyd, lbw, b Elliott 4 A.
