BENGALI MANIFESTO.

A remarkable appeal, signed, it is stated, by "every Maharajah, Rajah, nobleman, zemindar, and man of note in Bengal," is published in the Indian press. The following extracts indicate its tenor:—"Recent events' we feel sure, must arouse the gravest anxiety in the hearts of our countrymen. The time, we think, has now come when the most indifferent amongst us should carefully consider the situation. We hope it will not be thought presumptuous of us to ask our people to do so at this juncture. Everyone will concede that the first duty of a citizen is to support law and order. No society can overlook lawlessness and no Government can tolerate it. The few acts of anarchy which have been committed, and by which the innocent suffered, cannot but have shocked and horrified all who wish their country well. It is a matter of the deepest regret that anarchism, so alien to Indian people, so repugnant to their innate ideas,

should have found its way into this land. We venture to assert it ia the duty of every citizen to see the growth of such anarchism altogether checked. We need hardly say this crisis in our affairs calls for the utmost prudence and -coolness. Any ill-considered writings on one side or the other are of the gravest danger to the public welfare."
