SALE OF WORK.
IN AID OF CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. The interior of the Foresters' Masterton, presented an attractive appearance yesterday, when a band of enthusiastic workers had transferred the commodious place into a temporary bazaar, where all kinds of useful articles, refreshments, etc*, were vended for a worthy, object. The occasion was the sale of work in aid of the Congregational Church funds, the special object being to assist towards the purchase of a residence for the pastor. The function was opened by the Mayor (Mr P. L. Boilings), in the presence of a good attendance of the public. The Mayor made a very effective speech, in which he spoke in high terms of the worthy place the young church already occupied in the town. He requested the liberal patronage of the public for the sale then opened, and said that the committee of the function and the industrious workers who contributed to the stalls deserved cordial thanks for their efforts. Mr J. Hunter, treasurer of the Church, also made a brief speech," in
which he said the function did not aim at being pretensiuus, and was a modest effort for a worthy cause. The Church was only talked of twelve months ago, and since then £l,lOO had been expended in Masterton on its erection and equipment.
The Rev. Hodge, who presided at the gathering, also* spoke, thanking heartily all who had assisted towards the sale. The stallholders are: —Guild Stall: Mesdames Whelch, Joy and Hodge. Fancy Stall: Mesdames Hendry and Parton. Flower Stall: Mesdames Welch and Feasey. Lollie Stall: Misses Hunter, Hodge, and Tooby. Produce: Mesdames Berriman and Green, and Misses Cresswell and Joy. Jumble Stall: Young men of the church. Refreshment Stall: Mesdames Redman, Fielding, Scales, Tooby, Hunter and Miss Holdaway. There are various side attractions, such as weighing machines, a shooting gallery, etc., and altogether good entertainment is provided. Last night a concert programme was rendered, which was greatly enjoyed. Really good business was done at the stalls, a substantial amount being taken. The sale will be continued this afternoon and to-night, when good attendances are again anticipated.
