At a meeting of Wellington citizens yesterday, it was decked, to entertain the Hon. W. P. Hill, who haa been transferred to Hawera, was brought Up at the meeting o? the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The; Chairman (Mr£. B. Moodie), in ftioving that a letter be sent to A'.j Hill'expressing the Chamber's reg.et at his departure, and appreciation of I his courtesy and attention to his duties, paid a high tribute to the stationmaster's popularity in his official position, and said his departure would be very generally regretted. Other members spoke eutogietically of Mr Hill's capacity, the unvarying courtesy shown by him, and his readiness to oblige merchants and persons generally using the railway facilities at- Masterton. It was decided to send the letter, as moved by Mr Moodie, the writing of which was left to Messrs Moodie and Daniell.
On Thursday evening shortly after seven o'clock a well-known resident of Featherston, Mr Kenneth McKenzie died. For some time past he has been in indifferent health suffering from that dire complaint consumption. On Tuesday morning he went to the polling-booth and recorded his vote, and shortly afterwards collapsed and was taken to Mr A. McKenzie's, where he has been residing for some months. Although with the kind attention given him he rallied a little, yet he gradually sank till the end came as stated. The deceased is a son of Mr J. Mc Kenzie, who is living at Taroumu, Waipawa. There are to brothers and three snter-J to mourn the loss of the departed. Mr A. McKenzie is a cousin of the deceased, who has also a number of relatives in the Wairarapa. Mr McKenzie was about 44 years of age, and was born in the Wairarapa, where he spent nearly all his life. For a number of years he was well-known as a moßt successful trainer, his headquarters being at Tauherenikau. The funeral will take place to-day, leaving the residence of Mr Alex. McKenzie, Featherston, at 2.30 p.m.
