SLAUGHTER OF PROTECTED BIRDS.

The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, at its meeting on Wednesday evening, received a letter from Mr Edgar F. Stead, stating that on Sunday.he saw twe youths with guns and on the sandspit at the mouth of the Rakaia River, where whitefronted terns were resting in large numbers, and h'ring into the flock, killing many and wounding several of the birds. He asked whether the Society could see its way to place notices at the places frequented by the birds, pointing out that they were protected. Besides the terns, a great number of black and redbilled gulls were destroyed on the occasion referred to. The writer found four birds flapping "helplessly on the sand, and the youths had made no attempt to collect those kilted, and left the wounded birds. On the motion of Dr Moorhouse, it was decided to place notices at the mouths of the Rakaia and Selwyn Eivers, and also to ask the Minister' for i Internal Affairs to co-operate with the Society in making the protection widely known.
