BOWLING.

THE DIXON CUP. Mr E. Shep Dixon, the well-known cordial manufacturer, of Palmerston North, is a great enthusiast in bowling, and to assist the game to flourish on this coast and the districts across the Range, he has presented a beautiful silver cup for competition. The clubs that will be allowed to compete for the cup are Shannon, Levin, Otaki, Foxton, Marton, Peilding, Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua, Master ton, and Palmerston North, and the effect of the presentation will be to increase friendly contests in and around the Manawatu district. A photograph of the cup and a copy of the conditions have been forwarded to each competing club to be hung in the respective pavilions for scrutiny by members, while in the handsome case accompanying the cup is a neat scoring book in which records will be kept. It is a regrettable fact that no records have been kept of matches for the Yates' Feathers and other trophies, but thanks to Mr Dixon's foresight, this will not occur in the contests for his cup. The trophy, which will be known as Dixon's Manawatu Challenge Rink Cup, will be competed for under the following conditions : 1. The cup shall not be won outright by any club. 2. All challenges must be sent in writing to the secretary of the club holding the cup, and seven days' notice to be given. 3. The holders of the cup cannot be challenged by members of their own club, and no alteration of the players to be made unless with the consent of the challenging team. 4. In the ©vent of any dispute arising during the progress of the game, such dispute shall be referred to a member of each of the teams, and if necessary an arbitrator shall be called in whose decision shall be final. 5. The cup shall be competed for under the rules Of the N.I. Bowling Association. 6. All games played shall be entered into a book provided with the cup. 7. The'skip of the winning team shall hold, and be personally responsible for the cup. 8. No player shall be entitled to compete for the cup after having been defeated before the expiration of one calendar month. 9. Any rink playing with untested bowls shall be disqualified, and the cup handed over to the rink challenging or defending, as the case may be. 10. For every two wins secured by any club then the name only of the club and dates shall be engraved on the shields. 11. All games played shall be 21 heads. 12. At the conclusion of each game played, the president, or in his absence the vice-president, shall present the cup to the winners. 13. Any further information will be supplied upon making application to the Hon. Secretary of the Palmerston North Bowling Club. 14. The Shannon Bovv ling Club to be the first holders. The first match for the cup was played at Shannon on Saturday, says the "Manawatu Evening Standard," between rinks skipped by Messrs Stanaell and Gunning, the cup was formallv handed over to the Shannon Club by Mr J. A. Nash (Mayor of Palmerston North). Mr Nash made eulogistic reference to Mr Dixon's generosity in giving such a magnificent trophy for competition, and thought the latter's action was to be admired by all who were players or interested in buwling. Mr Dixon had paid a graceful compliment to the Shannon Clab in making them the first holders, and he trusted that bowlers would snow their appreciation of the donor's 'goodness by working up a keen competition for the cup. ' Cheers were then given for Mr Dixon, and the generosity of this gentleman was also suitably acknowledged by officials of the Shannon Club.
