NOTES. ' <By "Zetland'!). On Saturday the Canterbury Jockey Club concluded one of the most successful meetings yet recorded in the history of New Zealand racing. The totalisator turnover was again very large, and went to prove that at v - least Canterbury is not very materially affected by the stringency of the money market. By winning the Port Cooper Hurdles with 1215 Lyrist showed that he is at the top of his form, while Stronghold .11.10, again proved his worth as a .game horse over the sticks. The chestnut son • of Clanranald is apt to be somewhat inconsistent in flat events, but at the illegitimate game runs very true. Of a really good field in the Cressy Welter of 6 furlongs, Alexis' proved to be the speediest at the weights, while Rose Noble improved on his previous running by. getting into second place. Obligato and De- ' bonnaire, the two bottom weights, , finished first and second ■ in ' the Seymour Handicap, and Master Soult scored from the consistent Truganini in the Members' Handicap. Both these norses had shewn good form ing, .and were well backed by the public. The Pioneer Handicap fell to Mr W. E. Bidwill's Expansion, '•' and this got Wairarapa on to the winning list. As fully expected the speedy Bobrikoff accounted for the Stead Memorial Cup, of ty miles, and the issue in the Randolph Handicap,of 5 furlongs, was fought out by Naumai and Armlet, the latter scoring in fine style. The Menschikoff filly may be counted as first-class over the distance, and in beating several very speedy ones Naumai, with top weight, ran very creditably. It is only eight months ago since the • Conqueror gelding his ■ backers with a good dividend in a five-furlong race at the Masterton •raeeting, and since that time has proved to be/worthy of racing with the best sprinters of the Dominion. Apa, whose solid condition allows him to run out a mile and a quarter at a very solid pace, won the Fendalton Handicap in a fine field. Several of the contestants rank as stayers, but the Metropolitan Handicap winner finished like a racehorse, and thus materially increased Mr F. Preston's winning cheque, and partly compensated him for his bad luck, in Frisco not being able to show his , best form at the fixtures. The fail- ' ure of the Masterton-traiiied horsesMoloch, Rifiemaid and Sunbonnetito run prominently, need not be ' taken to show that they are not class , .enough to compete at Riccarton, but , probably shows that they could not be got into solid enough Condition at jbhis time of the year. The racing ,in the South may possibly have done them good, and it is quite probable- that within a couple of months they will have greatly benefited by the spring running, and ' show form accordingly.
