SCENES AT A FUNERAL. CALCUTTA, November 13. "The Indian Government and Press recognise that the demonstration ■at the funeral of Kama Lai Dutt, ■executed for the murder of Gossain, is a seditious manifestation of a pro--nounced type. Received November 15, 4.30 p.m. CALCUTTA, November 14. The authorities handed Kania's 'body over to his relatives, not sus•pecting what was about to occur. When out of sight ot the place of execution, a Brahma blessed the .body, and a garland was placed *ound the dead man's neck. The bier was smothered with flowers.

Ladies in every household on the xoute loudly demanded to see the •dead; hence, contrary to Hindu custom, the face was uncovered. The procession halted at almost <e?ery third house to allow the body to be viewed.

A large percentage of the mourners belonged to respectable Calcutta families.

Several Bengalis are considering the erection at Chandernagore of fclock of marble over the dead man's ashes, to be inscribed, "He died for his country."

QUEEN VICTORIA'S STATUE DAMAGED. Received November 15, 4.25 p.m. CALCUTTA, November 14. The face of Queen Victoria's statue at Nagpur has been daubed with tar, tbe sceptre smashed, and the nose and fingers broken off.

Kanai was hanged at Alipur last week. Many women, contrary to Indian custom, followed the body to the burying ghat. The remains were placed on,a pyre of sandalwood and were anointed with ghee, as in the case of distinguished persons. The murderer's uncle delivered, an oration.
