CRIME IN MAINE.

MESSAGE FROM THE STATE

GOVERNOR,

GRAVE MISREPRESENTATIONS. LIQUOR PARTY EXPOSED. On Monday last, November 9th, the Christchurch No-License League cabled to the Governor of the State of Maine, United States, as follows :

"Liquor party here allege that there is more drunkenness apd crime in your State than in license States in proportion to population. Is this true? Please reply immediately." The following cable reply has just been received—

'"MAINE, Friday. "Allegations of Liquor party re Maine absolutely untrue. "WILLIAM T. COBB, "Governor, State of Maine." The evidence against the brewers monopoly is accumulating rapidly. The tricks and deceptions which they kept concealed till • the eve of the election are being freely exposed. The brewers evidently did not count on the No-License party being able to deal so promptly with their fraudulent contrivances. Electors beware! We have not the slightest hesitation in saying that each day the Liquor party will endeavour to practice some new deception on you. But the facts are all against them, and the No-License party do not fear the result as long as they have an opportunity of replying- , . What we desire to warn electors against is being misled by false statements which there is no time to disprove.

Note this: If the "facts" which are nw being circulated by the Liquor party we/e true, they would have painted the Dominion red with them weeks and months ago. It is because they know perfectly well that they will not bear the light of investigation that they have kept them carefully concealed till within a day or two of the election. *
