PARTIAL STRIKE OF BARMAIDS.

CURIOUS SITUATION IN NELSON. By Telegraph—Press Association. NELSON, November 13. A curious and amusing partial strike of barmaids occurred in the Nel'son hotels yesterday, owing to the manifesto by the three local brewers promising to prohibit the employment of barmaids in their tied houses a3 a condition of future leases. The girls were very indignant,- and did their best to dissuade people from drinking local beer. Consequently less beer was consumed in the day than for many years past. In one free house, the landlady cut off the pipes from the casks of local beer, cancelled orders for aerated waters and cordials from a local brewer, and drew only a Southern ale. The position is less acute to-day, but the semi-boycott of local beer continues in a mild form. The No-License party is hilarious over the brewers' manifesto, quoting in advertisements the lines: "The devil was sick, the devil a monk would be," etc. The No-License campaign completely overshadows the Parliamentary elections and the candidates.
