MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held in the Secretary's office last evening. Thsre were present:—Messrs R. -Brown (Chairman), H. J. O'Leary, A. W. Chapman, C. Perry, H. H. Cork and G. Townsend. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £62 9s 4d. A letter was received from the Education Department regretting I that they were unable to make a .grant for the construction of an Assembly Hall at the Masterton .District High School. Mr Perry, as one of the committee appointed to report on the dressmaking class, as to the class securing a grant from the Education Board, stated that the Education Department made grants only for a certain system of dressmaking, and that if that system were not adopted .no grants could be obtained. A Committee consisting of Messrs Perry, Waddington, and Townsend, %vere instructed to ascertain the amount that would be required for sewing machines, and also the amount that would be required for the engagement of an instructress to the class. Mr Cork spoke in high terms of the services rendered by Miss Talbot —as instructress to the cookery class at the Masterton District High School, and also of the pleasing function given by the scholars. On Mr Cork's motion the Committee's appreciation of Miss Talbot's teaching was placed on record. The visiting members for the month were appointed as follow: — Messrs Perry, Waddington and Townsend.
The report of the Headmaster, Mr W. H. Jackson, which read as follows, was adopted: —Attendance —Main school, roll 646, average , attendance 591, percentage of attendance 91; Side School, 193, 177 «nd 91; Secondary [Classes, 99, 93 -and 94. The attendance for the month has been very good. There are •no names for the absentee report. The annual examination of the pupils of the secondary classes has 'been held this week by Inspectors JFleming and Tennant. 1 have pleasure in notifying the committee that all the pupils from this school who -commenced their course at Victoria College this year were successful in the annual examinations of the College. The new class-room is now -completed and ready for its furni•ure. I have made application to the Board for the requisite number of •desks, and have asked that the room be equipped with a modern type of ■desk instead of the clumsy "allwood" kind usually supplied. I •have pleasure in notifying the committee of the receipt of a good ■supply of seedling plants for the ■Side School, from Mr E. Hale, and ■also of a sack of artificial manure from Dalgety and Co., per Mr J. B. JMoodie. .
