We learn from the Master ton County Clerk (Mr F. G. Moore) that by an unfortunate mistake the mail bag containing the Alfredton Riding ballot boxes, which was despatched .from Alfredton yesterday morning on its journey to Masterton, instead of being sent on from Eketahuna .to Masterton, was transferred to the return coach, and consequently was carried back to the Alfredton Post Office, where it now lies. As no advices by letter have reached the County office from any of the several Deputy Returning Officers, it is assumed that the bag in question contain these, and therefore no announcement can be made with regard to the result of the Alfredton Riding election until after the arrival of the afternoon mail train today, by which it is hoped the missing boxes will reach their destination safely.

Montague Charles Melly was charged at the Masterton Police Court, yesterday, with disturbing a public meeting in Masterton on Thursday evening last in the Masterton Town Hall. Defendant did not appear. Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for defendant, and admitted the offence. The police stated that the Rev- Whitehouse, of Ashburton, was giving a No-License lecture, and defendant was so persistent in his interruptions that he had to be removed. A fine of Is with 7s costs was imposed. At the same sitting of the Court Peter Mortensen and Peter Neilsen, two prohibited persons, repesenteci by Mr C. A. Pownall, pleaded guilty to being in the licensed booth at the Opaki races. A fine of 20s and 7s costs was imposed on Mortensen, and 5s and 9s costs on Neilsen. James O'Brien admitted having used indecent language i:i Queen street on Wednesday last, and also breaking two panes of glass, the property of Peter Neilsen. He was fined 20s, in detault seven days' hard labour on the first charge and £1 in default seven days' on charge, the sentences to be cumulative.
