After a dull and showery morning the weather turned out beautifully fine for the third day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. The times registered were very fast, and Signor put up an Australasian record when he won the Canterbury Cup in 3min 53 2-ssec, while Bobrikoff's mile in lmin 39 4-ssec was a record for Riccarton, and Artillerie's 2min 37 4-5 sec a record for the Oaks. The totalisator investments amounted to £19.920, as against £20,216 last year. Bookmakers' fees amounted to £695. Results: —
Suburban Hurdles Handicap, once round and a distance—Stronghold, 10.5, 1; Snip, 11.0, 2; Leonardo, 10.7, 3. Also started— Playmate 10.9, and Farley Grove 9.0. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 3min 4 l-ssec.
Spring Nursery Handicap, for two-year-olds, tour furlongs--Kilwinning, 7.10, 1; Appiegarth, 8.2, 2; Boutade, 6.11, 3. Also started—Day Beam 8.5, Merrig;\l 7.5, Cymbriform 7.5, Caspian 7.5, Celaeno 7.4, Latchet 7.4, and Aema 6.7. Won by half, a length. Time, 50sec. Avon Welter Handicap, seven furlongs—St- Aidan, 9.3, 1; Prism, 7.8, 2; Grenadier, 9.13, 3. CANTERBURY CUP, of 700 sovs; weight-for-age; 2£ miles. Signor, 9.1 1 Diabolo, 7.6 2 Downfall, 9.3 3 Also started Zimmerman 9.5, Master Delaval 9 3 and Husbandman 7.0. Diabolo made the running until the straight was reached, when Signor put in his claim and won easily by four lengths. Downfall was five lengths away. Time, 3min 53 2-ssec.
Jockey Club Handicap, 1 mile— Bobrikoff, 9.1, 1; Master Soult 7.13, 2; Full Rate, 7.11, 3. Oaks Stakes, 1J mile, for three-year-old fillies, weight 8.10. —• Artillerie 1, Chanteuse 2, Sunglow 8. Also started -Pellicle, Santita, Dabchick, Bountiful and Tikitcrc. Artillerie led all the way, and won by a length and a-half. Time, 2min 37 4-ssec.
