THE HERO FUND.

Details of Mr Carnegie's fund for recognising the bravery of heroes of peace show that the interest on the fund is to be used "to place those following peaceful vocations, who have been injured in heroic effort to save human life, in somewhat better positions pecuniarily than before, until again able to work. In case of death the widow and children are to be provided for until the widow remarries, and the children until they reach self-supporting age. For exceptional children exceptional grants may be made for advanced education. Grants in money or in other forms may also bo made to heroes or heroines as the trustees deem advisable, —each case to be judged on its merits." No grant is to be continued unless the recipient is a sober and respectable member of the community. Mr Carnegie's benefactions arc estimated at from £25,000,000 to £34,000,000. The principal ones

are:— 1,400 libraries £8,400,000 Scottish Universities £3,000,000 Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg £4,000,000 Pittsburg Polytechnic £2,000,000 Hero Fund, America £1,000,000 Pensions for American Professors £1,000,000 Mr Carnegie retired from steelmaking with a capital of £40,000,000, and an income of over £2,000,000.
