N.Z. CUP WON BY DOWNFALL. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. The New Zealand Cup meeting opened to-day in fine weather, although during the early part of the afternoon a cold easterly wind made matters rather unpleasant for the spectators. There was a very large attendance, including Lord Plunket and suite. The course and surroundings were in capital order, and the racing throughout was extremely interesting, the times registered being very fast. The totalistor investments amounted to £22,956, as against £28,041 last year, but this deficiency will be more than made up by fees from fifty-nine bookmakers who were licensed. Results Spring Hurdles Handicap, of 250 sovs, two miles—Lyrist, 10.13, 1; Snip, 9.9. 2; Stormont, 12.6, 3. Also started—Yosami 9.7, Whatakura 9.5, Oasis 9.4, and Northern Star 9.0. Lyrist was always in a good position, and drawing away at the top turn, won comfortably by two and a half lengths. Stormont was three lengths away. Time, 3min 51 4-ssec. Maiden Plate of 300sovs, one mile Artillerie, 7.2, 1; Gold Lace, 7.2, 2; Chanteuse, 7.2, 3. Also started —Sant Rosa and Seer 7.13, Ringdove 7.£, Whistlecraft 7.7, Valdimar 7.4, Lady Lucy, Tikitere, Pellicle, Santita, and Passion 7.2. Gold Lace was the quickest away, and led right to thedistance, where Artillerie finishing fast, caught her, and won by a neck. Chanteuse was three lengths away. Time, lmin 40 2-5 sec. Riccarton Welter Handicap, of 300sovs, one mile—Husbandman, 9.2, 1; Los Angelos, 8.3, 2; Rose Noble, 8.12, 3. Also started— Stronghold 9.13, Vasa 9.7, Diabolo 9.4, Prim 9.0, Harvest 8.11, Golden Cairn and The Libyan 8.9, Contender 8.8, Outlander 8.6, Prism and Bountiful 8.0.
