THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY.
SITUATION BECOMING ACUTE,
By Telegraph—Press Association
WELLINGTON. November 8
A Taihape message states that the situation in the sawmitling industryis becoming acute. Some m'lls have closed down altogether, and others are working only five davs per week. Millers are receiving scarcely any orders, and merchants are overstocked. This is due partly to the slackness of trade, but largely to thd* importation of the Oregon pine. On Monday a third of the hands will be discharged from Gamman's mill at Ohakune. A mass meeting of workers was held at Taihape on Saturday, the employers attending by invitation. 'lhe milltrs are reported to have satisfied the workers of the falseness of the allegations that orders are( being witheld to accentuate depression, so as to get a heavier duty on Oregon pine. A joint committee of the millers and workers is to go into the whole question
