MASTERTON HOMING CLUB.
A SUCCESSFUL OVERSEA RACE,
j The Masterton Homing Club held a race from Nelson yesterday afternoon, the air-line distance being 130 miles. The birds were liberated at 10 a.m. at Nelson, and the first bird arrived at Masterton at 1.1? p.m., thus accomplishing the distance in 3hra 18mins. A north-west wind was blowing in Masterton, but more favourable weather must have been experienced earlier in the journey, otherwise the velocity of 1,140 yards per minute would have been almost impossible. The consistent way in which the pigeons have been performing, especially over the longer distances, is very encouraging to the members, and will do much to place pigeon racing on a sound footing in Masterton. The winner takes Mr AbrahalPs pair of young birds. Mr F. H. Rosson acted as judge. The following is the result:— Mr J. Bradbury's "Apollo," I,l4oyds per minute 1 Mr H. Lett's "Wind,'' I,l3Byds per minute 2 Mr W. Hoar's "Royal Mail," 1,136 yds per minute 3 The next race will be flown from Wellington on November 9th, when a departure trom the usual mode of liberating in a flock will be made. Each member is limited to one bird, and each bird v»ill be liberated separately at 15 minutes' interval commencing at 9 a.m. The first birds liberated will have no advantage over the later ones, as the time of liberation will be taken into account. Mr W. Elliott, a promient Wellington homing pigeon fancier, has kindly undertaken the duties of liberator.
