It wa.« a rather unusual event the other day when the Mayor of Doncaster refused to be presented to the King, states a London paper. His Worship (Alderman Joseph Firth Clark) was asked by Mr Lewis Harcourt to meet him at the foot of the lift leading to the Royal box after the St.Leger race had been won. He < declined in the following letter:—-"It would indeed have been a great honour, which I should have looked 'back upon all my life with the greatest gratification, as I have a profound respect, and regard for our most gracious King, whom I desire to honour in every way, as one of his most loyal subjects. Though 1 have lived in Doncaster all my life, I have never once attended the races, acd I did not, therefore, feel that I could consistently break through ths rule, even tor so great an honour."
