Ashburton carried No-license by a 3-sths majority. Ashburton by a large majority voted for Restoration, but were unfortunately unable to secure the necessary 3-sths, although in the business centre of the Borough the vote was nearly two to one for restoration of licenses. ELECTORS OF MASTERTON DON,T make trial of a scheme which you, like Ashburtoh, cannot reverse when you desire to do so. BISHOP JULIUS AND THE CLERGY OF ANGLICAN SYNOD FAVOUR NO-LICENSE, The Liquor Party stated in an advertisement yesterday morning that —" The Clergy nf Christehurcb Diocesan Synod rejected a motion commending No-License by 27 votes to 12." THIS IS UNTRUE. and it is surely unwise of the Liquor party to take advantage of an error in a press massage, which has since been corrected. The voting of the clergy was as follows .- In favour of the motion 29 Against the motion 10 This is remarkable in view of the fact that at one time Bishop Julius stood pract icaEy alone in the Synod as a No: License advocate. THE ANGLICAN SYNOD AT AUCKLAND PASSED A RESOLUTION IN FAVOUR OF NO.LIC ENSE Af tW DAYS AGO. The late Mr Gladstone's name is brought into the question. In a speech in the House of Commons in 1880 Mr Gladstone remarked : "It has been said that greater calamities are inflicted on mankind by inteniperance than by the three great historical scourges —war pestilence and famine THIS IS TRUE FOE US, AND IT IS THE MEASURE OF OUR DISCREDIT AND DISGRACE." In reply to a deputation of brewers, Mr Gladstone said:— ■ "Do not give yourselves any trouble about the revenue. With a sober population not wasting their earnings I shall know where to obtain revemie." " - . In the same advertisement misleading statements are made about crime in InvercargilL Voters know perfectly well that offences which {take place in adjoining License Electorates are tried in Invereargill. The Liquor party take advantage of this fact to mislead the public, but we have already given full information. Mr H. D. Bedford will have something to say about it also.
