A CONFUSING ISSUE.
It is now generally admitted that the taking of the Local Option Poll ,on the same'day as the election of members of Parliament is a mistake, remarks the Auckland "Herald." It has resulted in mixing up national politics with a purely locai and extraneous issue, to the great detriment, as we relieve, of public life. Candidates are no longer judged on their presonal fitness or political views, but on the opinions they hold on the No-License question. The electors are no longer asked to pronounce judgment on the policy and legislative measures of the, Ministry, but to declare whether the number, of hotels in their district shall or shall not be reduced, or even swept out of existence altogether. At every triennial Parliamentary election the Local Option issue is thrust into the foremost place, and all other considerations are relegated, by a large section of the community, into a subordinate postion.
