A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

Yesterday afternoon a serious accident occurred on board the collier Waipoui, which was discharging a cargo of coal at Lyttelton, the victim being a man named Alexander Greer, who was working jn No. 2 hold. A basket of coal was being hoisted up when it struck a derrick and capsized. A large piece .of coal, weighing over half a hundredweight, fell out of the baeket and struck Greer on the top of the head, inflicting terrible injuries. The unfortunate man was at once got up. from the hold and taken to the. casualty ward, where he was attended. He was operated on, and it was found that he was suffering from shock. There was a compound fracture of the top of the skull, which was splintered into small pieces, and a fracture of the base of the skull.
Greer passed a fairly good night. He .is stili unconscious, although there was a slieht improvement in his condition this morning.
