PERSONAL.

Mr A, J. Minifie, of Masterton„ who has been residing for the last, nine months at Petone, on account; of his health, will return to Masterton within the next few days. MrMinifie has greatly benefited irv health during his sojourn in Petone.

Mr Thomas Butler, who has been, connected with the Health Department since its inception, died atWellington yesterday morning, aftera lingering illness. Deceased was well-known in snorting circles, beingat the time of his death secretary of" the Wellington Coursing Club.

Ye?terd;iv morning another of Wellington's narly settlers passed awav in the person of Mrs Ivnowles, widow of the late Mr John Knowles, formerly Under-Secretary for Public Works. The deceased, who was born at London in 1827, arrived in Wellington via Lvttelton, in the barque Mineijva (ttie last of the Canterbury Association's vessels) with her husband on hia return to New Zealand in M'arch, 1853.

"The Prime Minister and the Hrn. W. Hall-Jones will be the only Ministers who will travel from Wellington by the special train which leaves on Thursday night for Auckland in connection with the opening of the Main Trunk railway. There will be four members of the Cabinet in Auckland when they arriva, the other two Ministers being the Hons. G. Fowlds ar.d J. M'Gowan.

Mr F. G. Wayne, who has been transferred to the Veterinary Department ot the Stock Office, will leave about Tuesday next to take up his new position as Inspector at the Thames Abattoirs. A new abattoir is about to be erected tnere to supersede the present wcrks. Mr Wayne was one uf the moat courteous and obliging officials ever stationed at the Masterton Stock Office, and his projected departure has been the cause of many expressions of regret among local farmers and persorts" having business with the Department.

The death is announced of Captain John Frederick Hansen, an esteemed resident of Port Ahuriri. at j'the age of 55. The deceased arrived in Napier ,by the schooner Napier about twenty-years ago, but about five years later he went to Auckland. He remained in the Northern city till 1906, when he returned to the Hawke's Bay district and took command of the auxiliary schooner Tuhara. He left that vessel about six months ago, and from then till the time of his death was mate of the steamer Ahuriri. The deceased leaves a widow and a young daughter.
