A BUSINESS PROPOSITION. ~ JO-LICENSE is the biggest business proposition before the country at the preu * sent time. To demonstrate this one needs only to go to Invorcargill. There, since NoLicense has been adopted, PROPERTY has GONE UP ENORMOUSLY in VALUE, KATES have been REDUCED, the salaries of the municipal servants (including that of tho Mayor) have been increased. A hundred business men have testified to the soundness of business. The Trades and Labour Council have unanimously advised the Affiliated Unions tc vote No-License at the coming poll. It is estimated that the total sum paid purchasers for the liquor consumed in the Dominion exceeds five million pounds (.£5,000,000) per annum, or more than the total expenditure on tho following items of the Dominion's administration (Government Year Book, 1906):—Old Age, civil and military, pensions, •£304,922 ; railways, £1,594,954 ; education, £714,071; hospitals and charitable institutions, £131,102 : mental hospitals, ,£79,503 ; post and telegraph service, £577,115; judicial and legal, defence, £150,555 ; subsidies to local bodies, £90,348 ; Department of Agriculture, £124,045; Valuation Department, £30,272; Customs! £44,452 ; marine, including harbour and lights, £48,490; printing and stationery, £43,862 ; electoral, £51,570 ; Land and Income°Tax Department, £20,220; registration lands and deeds, births, marriages and deaths, £26,772; public buildings and domains, £26,893; Public Health Department, £23,215; Tourist Department, £28,267; territorial, £298,630; industries and commerce, £40,067; salaries (governor, ministers, and legislators), £75,416; miscellaneous, £139,078—a total of £4,971,577. In face of the figures the five million pounds, which it is estimated consumers pay for liquor, is amazing. APART FROM THE GREAT FINANCIAL LOSS IT REPRESENTS THE WRECKAGE OF LIFE, CHARACTER, AND PUBLIC WELLBEING IS INCALCULABLE. The retail price paid by consumers for drink is estimated at over £5 per head of the total population of the Dominion. The population of tho Masterton district is, say, 20,000. A very simple sum will show what the probable approximate cost of the drink traffic is to this district annually. Voters of Masterton will have the power at the coming election to remove the cause of this ruin and great financial waste by STRIKING OUT THE TOP LINE ONLY. Watch this Space To-morrow.
