THE CARTERTON SHOW.

PEOPLE'S DAY,

) FAVOURABLE WEATHER PREVAILS. 7 The weather was simply perfect for the second day of the Carterton Show 1 yesterday, and as a consequence there was a very larg'e attendance of the public, The grounds looked as bright and picturesque as on the pre-1 vious day, and the beautiful costumes of the women-folk present .at the gathering added additional charms to the surroundings. The Show furnished a most delightful outing to those who visited it, besides the utility it had for the many breeders, exhibitors, and the commercial section generally of the public, The gates and grandstands-produced £l2O 2s9d, as against £194 18s, afc lastShow, but the Society accounts for this by the fact that 150 new members have been added recently to the Society's-roll, and nearly 300 entries meant the issue of a great many extra free tickets. The attendance must have approximated nearly 5,000 persons. A feature of the day was the live stock paraded, and it was so impressive that visitiors ,to : Shows far and. near could not withhold their admiration. The dairy cattle made a most imposing procession, as did the horses. In addition, vehicles and riders swelled the ranks until the ring was an arena of a most striking kind. The luncheon, supervised by Mr G. W. Deller, was as usual unimpeachable, the interior and exterior, decorations of the grandstand with greenery being also most effective. The Carterton Band played selections on the people's lawn during the afternoon, the music being much appreciated. - The result of the weight-guessing competition will not be ascertainable until to-morrow. Mr Hopkins, Government bee expert, gave an exhibition of how to handle bees, a large number of apiarists watching the instructive exhibition, ■•'•■'■' . <■: ■'.''' ,'-.- In the competition for the Quibell Cup, given for most points, in any one of the sheep classes, Messrs Nelson Bros., of Hawke's Bay, were easy winners in the Southdown class, with 21 points. Noake's Mignon, which won I the trophy right out (three times in ■; succession). The competition tor "bareback" riders was a splendid one, and was notable 1 for the fact that a lady, Miss E. Abbott, was the winner. She .negotiated the.jumps with the utmost ease, : and s&t like a rock on the back of her mount. The ! other riders were all, without a single exception; finished horsemen. : The judging of the, balance of the exhibits was carried through dn good style, although the rate at which they were made available to pressmen was .-■ not alarmingly fast,; and caused :| some inconvenience. : The, secetarial - staff, stewards, and : stipendiary ] officials, all worked harmoniously. J together, and a successful realisation I v» as the outcome. V ' Side-shows, as usual, did a big ] business, and in all respects the Show ■'. was enjoyed by the big. crowd of ' vistiora. , j ' In the powdered butter classes ..* E Barret was first, and Mrs A 1 Daysb second, and third in the class ( ''for immediate use," and Mrs; < Monaghan first, Mrs F J Dillon . second; and Mrs K- Booth third for i butter for use at least a week after j>«j making. POULTRY. Judge, Mr J. Currie. Wellington. The judge was satisfied with the exhibition, both in numbers and qualitv. He stated chat there were a few of the usual inferior quality of "agricultural" birds, but the better bred exhibits were splendid. "The Partridge Wyandottes stand out on their own," he said, "and I doubt if a better selection has been seen together in New Zealand i'or several years. The Brown Leghorns were also favoured by him, and several entries in the Silver Wyandottes. In the ducks there were some good exhibits, a Muscovy drake being aboul the pick. Homers were very strong, although the judge considered a softness in the feather was noticeable, . due to wrong dietary methods.
