MASTERTON RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.

; FIRST DAY. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The spring meeting of the MasterRacing Club opened yesterday under the most. favourable weather conditions, which contributed materially towards the success of the fixture. The attendance was large and representative, and included a larger number of visiting owners and trainers than usual. The racing track was in splendid condition, tor which the custodian (Mr Henry Welch) is to be commended. The arrangements generally were well up-to-date, and the officials carried out their various duties most satisfactorily, The secretary (Mr A. Hathaw'ay) and his assistants, Messrs W.Gillespie and C. Yates, displayed noteworthy efficiency in their work, which was executed most commendably throughout. Mr A. C. McDonell, assisted, by Mr V O'Neill, was successful in the starting, and most of the despatches were of an even character. The racing throughout was of a distinctly.interesting nature, good fields were seen out in the majority of events, and some fine finishes were witnessed. Speculation was fairly brisk, but the amount put through the totalisator was £5,069, being £3,111 less than on the first day of last year's autumn meeting. The deficiency will be nearly met by the amount received in bookmakers fees, there being fifteen pencillers—• nine inside and six outside—laying the odds. , Racing commenced'with the Hack Hurdles, for which Master Douglas and Liberator were scratched. Speciosa was made a strong favourite, but Yosami jumped much better than at Otaki and Trentham, and getting to the front early, won practically from end to end. Hatley put in a fast finish and got into second place. Lebeccio fell at the far side of the course, but his rider (A. escaped unhurt. • ■ Osiris was withdrawn from the Hack Plying, and Investment was made the public choice, with Conquer and Mildura next in order of backing. One of .the best finishes yet seen on ; the course took place between 1 Passive, Investment and Mildura, the three being under the whip for the last hundred yards, the first-named prevailingly a heck from Investment, with Mildura very close up third. The winner was turned out in nice condition by A. Godfrey, who has persevered well with the Lethe filly, and deserved the win. P. Cress rode a very determined finish on the winner. , Gaelic and San Fernando were the only withdrawals from the Masterton Cup, leaving thirteen to go to the post. The race was generally voted a very open one, and speculation was fairly even as regarded at least seven of the contestants. Skye carried on the running for nearly seven furlongs, the leading division including Blue Ribbon, Loiret, Sir Frisco, and Irish Rifle. When entering the straight Sir Frisco improved his position, Irish Rifle moved up and Silken Rein could be seen coming from the ruck. In a brilliant finish Sir Frisco,, ridden by R. Hatch, won by , a length from Irish Rifle, with Silken Rein,a good third. Irish Rifle bored in half-way down the straight, slightly interfering with Siken Rein, and the stewards, after holding an inquiry, cautioned S. Reid, rider of the former. i Fifteen started for the Maiden Scurry of half-a mile, and the two-year-old, Kiltie Lass, getting from the barrier quickly, won comfortably from the Birkenhead mare, Hermia,. The winner was rained by Mr J. 'Cress and ridden by F. Cress. Keen interest was taken in the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap, and Mrs W. Douglas' Espartero, by Torpedo ; —-Espaniola, a fine stamp of a racehorse, was made a better favourite than Golden Butterfly. The latter, very capably ridden by Mr J. Haxton, proved too good for the opposition, and after catching the leader, Don Carlos, at four furlongs, came away and won easily from the latter. The favourite was blocked out l at the start, and was not able to make up the lost ground. Golden Butterfly was turned out in the pink of form by J. Philips, who was warmly con gratulatedon the win. Highden and Lucretius were about level favourites for the October Hack. The result was unexpected, for the outsider Tangeroa won nicely from, Highden, while Routine, the least supported of the nine starters, finished third. Simplex was looked upon as "the good thing" for the Publicans' Handicap, but after racing with Lothair for six furlongs; gave way to Polyanthus, who won easily. The day's racing was brought to a conclusion with the Dash Hack. Tumut was the public fancy, and justified the opinion of backers by winning a nice race in fast time from Hormia, . The winning ridersduring the day were F. Cress two, R. Hatch two, H. Cairns one, E. Lowe one, P. O'Brien one, and Mr J. Haxton one win. The dividends paid during the day went to prove that Mr J. H. Pollock, the handicapper, had been successful in his w'brk, for out of the seven events for which he made the allotments, only two favourites prevailed. The results were as follow:—' HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, pf 70 sovs; one* mile and threequarters, W. Davies' hrm Yosami, 6yre, 9.0, The 'Officer-Elf- (H. Cairns) 1 F. Bowden's brg Hatley, aged, 10.5, (T.
