WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT.

At a meeting of the Borough ( •Works and Finance Committee, held on Tuesdav, the 20th insi, there were present—The Mayor an* Crs Elliott, tfwiiißton, Haughey, Hunter, Morris, Pauling, Prangell, Prentice and Yarr. . A report of the Borough Engineer, dated the 20th of uotober, m the following terms, was submitted and received:— ] There is! nothing occasioning to ; report on roiicme mat.fry. The new! pipe outlet to tho SLicei Hatha , has been comple'ed in-Me my esti- : mate, and it is now possible to discharge the whole contorts of the Bath"in about ninety minutes, and | seeing that the Baths take about six and a-half hours under nominal con- j A <litions to fill. We are now able to j w empty and fill within the hours be- ' tween the closing and the opening of j the Baths, which will obviate under | ordinary circumstances the necessity j**~ closing the Baths during the regulation hours, as has occasionally obtained during the past. The work of reforming and metalling Lincoln Road is now midway between Villa Street and Timothy Street, and is being pushed on with all possible speed. Works of kerbing and channelling are still proceeding in Villa Street North and South, and a portion in Pine Street. With such works is . proceeding path formation and road formation. The fence line in Villa Street along Hoffein's frontage is toeing set back, and the land has been conveyed to the Borough. Messrs Alpass and Heagerty have agreed to dedicate such land is 1 required to continue the widening of Villa Street North, on the north-west side, which will project- a chain road down to opposite Mrs Morgan's, , which has already been widened. The consideration in both cases is merely a nominal one, namely, that . of setting back a post and wire fence. • fc/U consider that both Mr Alpass and * Mr Heagerty have treated the Borough very generously in the matter, and are entitled to the thanks of the Borough. I have received tenders for the supply of scour and sluice valves irom several firms. With the exception of A. and T. Burt, the articles have to be imported, and in no case can the articles be supplied without delay. It was resolved that ten of the required valves be procured from A. and T. Burt, and if found satisfactory, that the balance of the •required number be obtained similarly. The Ranger and Poundkeeper attended the meeting to aft'drd an explanation of a discrepency in the •dates arising out of an account for the burying of the carcase of a horse shot on the Bth of July last. The Committee being now satisfied that the claim is one which the Council should properly meet, recommend that the claim of 15s \ for such service be now paid. A letter from H. J. Donald, asking for an increase in the contract price for the cartage of broken metal from Fernridge was considered.— The Committee decided not to increase the rate of payment tor such service. A communication was received from the Secretary of the Masterton Hospital upon the water supply outside the Borough.—The Committee recommend that the Masterton Hospital be informed that the Council ■ propose to accede to the request of the Education Board for a water sup-! ply from the Hospital's pipe main, • subject to the consent of the Master- ' ton Hospital being first obtained. A claim in the sum of £2 2s by Gazeley and Bartlet, tor the cartage of Park boulders to the depot, was submitted.—The Committee recommend that the claim be discharged subject to the Borough Engineer be- ■;-. ing satisfied that the account is in order. The Committee recommend that the application of W. S. Lett, for an extension of the Borough's water main in Jean Street, thereabouts two and a-half chains, be granted. The Town Clerk reported that he had, after due enquiry, licensed Frank Langston as a billiard-room keeper, on premises situated in Queen Street—The Committee recommended that the Town Clerk's action be approved. The Secretary of the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society having asked for the appointment of three Trustees to represent the Borough Council on this Board for one year from 7th December next, the Committee rceommend that Messrs William Morris and J. C. Ewington and Mrs Robert Keane be reappointed to that office, subject to their consenting to so act. The Secretary of the Pahiatua ~,._ Hfc&spital wrote requesting the appointment of a delegate to represent H the Borough Council at the statuary meeting of the Board, to be • held on the 7th December next.—The Committee rceommended that the Mayor of Pahiatua be appointed to so act, subject to his consenting thereto. The Committee recommended that the Town Clerk be appointed Trea .-surer of the Borough of Masterton.
