THE NORTHERN APPROACH.

THE BOROUGH COUNCIL DISAPPOINTED AT THE COUNTY COUNCIL'S ACTION. At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, Mr P. G. Moore, County Clerk, wrote intimating that the County Council intended approaching the ratepayers by circular in reference to the proposed improvement of the Northern aproach. The Mayor said he was disappointed at the attitude of the County Council. He thought that as the Borough Council had offered to assist so generously the County Council should have adopted a stronger attitude. Cr Ewington said he, too, was very greatly disapppointed, and thought the County Council was "without a spine." They had, at the meeting at which the deputation of Borough Councillors attended, shown themselves as favourable to the offer of the Borough Council, and the deputation had asked for a conference. What did the County Council do? At a subsequent meeting they made no move in the matter of a conference, but instead decided on its own initiative to take a plebiscite of its ratepayers. Such a proceeding was simply a means of shelving the question. He suggested that the committee of the Borough Council should meet of its own accord and take further steps. Cr Prentice thought with Cr Ewington that the County Council's action was a "smack in the face" for the Borough Council. Cr Morris said the Borough Council had done its level best to remove the disgrace, and as its efforts were so ungenerously received the Council should allow the matter to drop. Cr Haughey also considered the County Council had acted in a thankless manner. Cr Elliott thought the Borough Council should await the present result of the County Council's plebiscite. It was decided not to disband the committee of the Borough Council, but to await further communication ! from the County Council on the matter after the County ratepayers had been consulted.
