MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The Vasterton Borough Council met last evening. There were present,—His Worship the Mayor i'Mr P. L. Hollings), and Crs. J. Elliott, A. Haughey, W. Morris, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington, J. Prentice, and J. Yarr. A request from Mrs Amoore that her residence m Hope Street should be repaired was referred to the Works Committee. Robert Russell applied for a sec-QUd-hand dealer's license. "The Town Clerk repotted favourably on the application, tthich was duly granted, Messrs J. Devonport, H. WCoding, G. H. Grantham, K. Mcintosh, J. D. Anderson, H. P. Brassell, F. Exell, and H Cole and Son petitioned the Council to be allowed to remove gravel from the Waipoua river bed at the foot of Hope Street. The petitioners claimed that the property of the Council would not be prejudicially affected, and they themselves would be provided with employment for their teams and lessen the cost to builders of the metal taken. Some discussion ensued over the matter, Cr Ewington stating that the Council had no jurisdiction over the river, and therefore could not grant the application even if it desired. It was eventually decided to refer the matter to the Engineer to report on.
